Question for my classmates....

After viewing the video on Christopher Myers, what techniques do you think you could incorporate into your class to help gain  positive self confidence and increase the desire to read, especially with ELL students.

  1. Asking volunteers, authors, or community members of different ethnicities or cultural backgrounds to come in and discuss their challenges with learning to read and speak in English would be one way. If someone is unable to come to the classroom in person, we could use Skype on the SmartBoard so the student could communicate with the speaker.

  2. This is true. Open dialogue and education of different cultures is always important. The more we understand other people, the less our differences become.

  3. It is also good for students to see role models of all different ethnicities (especially in such a mixed population in the city). I remember reading in our child psychology text that it is especially good to invite successful African American male speakers into the classroom to set an example for students who may grow up without a father figure. Their idea of who they are and who they are to become can be jutted by bad home experiences (or neighborhood experiences). Bringing in someone such as themselves can help reassure them that the future is not set in stone.

  4. I like the idea of having students complete activities on their heritage and ancestry. Having students conduct research and write about their own families and family heritage I feel will help with motivation, and can help include parents and family members (i.e. interviewing a grandparent) into the learning process.

  5. Mary.

Students realizing that any trait is okay because that is who they are is essential. I feel techniques to ensure that are great. For example, a student can know more about themsleves and that would be more engaging. If students study thier pasts and know their family traditions this would be one way to help them be more engaged and develop confidence.
